Continuing our nine-part Meet the Bridge Builders video series, this week’s episode looks at the deep attention paid to the most minute details in construction and safety. In a design-build project, especially one on a bridge with an anticipated service life of 100 years, it is critically important to monitor and document progress daily.
The project management-construction management team included several independent quality assurance engineers whose sole role was oversight of construction. As construction manager Ken Blake mentions in the video, a mistake on the first day of a month would have severe ramifications if not detected until the end of the month, exponentially increasing the difficulty of fixing the problem.
Thinking ahead to anticipate challenges was something that happened on a daily basis, too. This proactive mindset enabled speedy resolution of many of the challenges that arose during construction.
