Mark Bixby Bike-Walk Path Still Being Built

In the future, the Mark Bixby Memorial Bicycle Pedestrian Path will be a great addition to Long Beach’s network of bicycle routes. Although the new bridge opened to vehicle traffic on Oct. 2, the Bixby Path is still under construction. While certain portions of the path may appear complete like the main span segment, they are not. And other portions of the path are still in early phases of construction, as shown in the photo above.

This portion of the bike pedestrian path runs along the Pier T frontage road, just east of the SR-47 intersection. What you see is a barrier concrete pour in progress. Concrete is filling the 4-foot-high barrier forms in the immediate foreground and running up to the green overhead signs in the far distance. The dirt lane where the concrete truck is parked is the future path, which still needs to be paved, striped and have signage installed.

Because the path has not yet opened, the entrances have been blocked for all, except construction vehicles. Stay tuned to this weekly update for more information on accessibility to the bike-walk path.
