Stringing Cables on the Main Span

In this week’s update, Port of Long Beach Capital Programs Executive Duane Kenagy, who oversees the new Bridge Project, discusses installation of cable-stays along the main span. Segments of the over-water portion of the bridge are built symmetrically. In a technique known as “balanced-cantilever,” segments are added on both sides of a tower at the same time, held aloft by the cables threaded from high on the tower.

The first pair of segments on the west tower (the Terminal Island side, pictured above) is completed, and the east tower is close behind. To watch Duane discuss the cable-stay stringing and balanced-cantilever approach, click here.
